Lada 21214 (Lada 4x4) - since 1977, the car has been produced under the name "Niva". Nevertheless, in the early 2000s, the rights to the name were transferred to Chevrolet, which launched the production of the Chevrolet Niva SUV. Therefore, since 2006, the official name of the VAZ model has been Lada 4x4, although the people still call the car simply “Niva” or “first Niva”.

The car went through several upgrades: one in the mid-1990s, and the second relatively recently - in 2009. First, Lada 2121 got a new rear door and lights, as well as a 1.7-liter engine, which replaced the 1.6-liter engine. In 2001, the power plant received distributed injection, after which the model received the index 21214. The maximum power of the power plant is 81 hp. at 5000 rpm, and the peak torque is 127 Nm at 4000 rpm.

In 2009, another major update took place, affecting the chassis and, of course, the factory index, which received the prefix in the form of the letter "M". The designers changed the geometry of the suspension, installed longer-stroke shock absorbers. The changes have led to the fact that "Lada" has become more confident at medium and high speeds, as well as less sensitive to the quality of the coating. The reactions of the steering wheel became more understandable, in the near-zero zone of which a distinct resistance appeared.

In addition, the changes affected the clutch and brakes. A larger clutch disc reduced the effort on the pedal, and also increased the life of the assembly. The brake system received a nine-inch vacuum booster and master cylinder from Kalina, making the brake pedal lighter and its travel shorter.

In the cabin, the old "tidy" gave way to the panel from "Samara".

May 2013 the company reported about the beginning of the installation of daylight lights, as well as painting according to the new method.

The car is equipped with a manual gearbox for five gears, as well as a “razdatka” with a locking center differential. The initial package includes power steering, audio preparation and 16-inch stamped wheels. The model has been used by the rescue services of several countries, suitable for frequent driving on rough terrain.
